If you make your own lip balm you can customize it exactly to suit your taste and need. You can choose which ingredients you use and in how much quantity you use them. The making process is very easy too.

DIY Homemade Lip Balms

1. Luxurious Honey Lip Balm
Ingredients:
- Shea butter
- Coconut oil
- Honey
- Red hibiscus flower
Process:
- Heat 1 tablespoon of shea butter for a few seconds to melt it.
- Add 1 tablespoon of coconut oil and mix well.
- Add 1 teaspoon of honey and mix once again.
- Wash a few fresh hibiscus petals and blend them to extract the rich red juice.
- Add a few drops of the hibiscus juice to your lip balm formula and mix well.
- Pour the mixture into a small glass container.
- Keep your lip balm container in the refrigerator so that it can solidify quickly.
Bonus Tip: Mix a little bit of honey with some sugar solution and use this paste to gently exfoliate your chapped lips. Rinse, gently pat dry and moisturize with your lip balm.

2. Beetroot Lip Balm
Beetroot is a natural dye, you can use it in many different DIY makeup products like blush, eyeshadow etc. If you have pigmented lips, this lip balm will give them a pretty colour in a jiffy. Beetroot Lip balm will make your lips instantly rosy and supple.
Ingredients:
- Beetroot
- Coconut oil
- Shea butter
Process:
- Wash a fresh beetroot and cut it into two halves.
- Grate one half of the beetroot and squeeze the grated pulp to extract the beetroot juice.
- Store the juice in a clean bowl.
- In another bowl, mix 1 tablespoon of coconut oil with 3 tablespoons of beetroot juice.
- Melt 1 tablespoon of shea butter and add it with the other ingredients.
- Mix the formula with a clean spoon.
- Pour the mixture into a small glass container and let it solidify in the refrigerator.
Bonus Tip: You can dry the beetroot pieces under the sun and grind them to make red beetroot powder. This powder can be used to impart a rosy colour to homemade beauty products.
3. Lime Lip Balm
Lime Lip balm feels exactly as refreshing as it sounds like. It'll keep your lips moisturized and give off an amazing fragrance too.
Ingredients:
- Shea butter
- Beeswax
- Almond oil
- Lemon essential oil
- Old lipstick (Optional)
Process:
- Melt 1 tablespoon shea butter and 1 tablespoon beeswax pellets using the double boiling method.
- Add a small piece of your favourite lipstick and let it melt with the other ingredients. This will add a tint to your lip balm. You can also proceed without lipstick.
- Add 1 tablespoon of sweet almond oil and mix well.
- Pour the mixture into a glass container and let it cool down.
- Add a few drops of lemon essential oil and stir with a clean toothpick.
- Transfer the container to the refrigerator and let the mixture solidify.
Double boiling: Place your ingredients in a heat-safe bowl and keep that bowl inside a larger bowl filled with boiling water.
4. Lip Balm Without Beeswax
If you don't want to use Beeswax in your lip balm then you can use Candelilla wax as a substitute. It is an organic emollient that will nourish your lips and keep them hydrated.
Ingredients:
- Candelilla wax
- Vitamin E oil
- Beetroot powder (optional)
- Peppermint essential oil
Process:
- Heat 1 tablespoon of candelilla wax to melt it.
- Pierce one capsule of Vitamin E oil and squeeze the oil out.
- Mix them well to blend them together.
- Add a pinch of beetroot powder to make your lip balm pinkish or reddish in colour.
- Add the aromatic peppermint oil and continue to stir well.
- Pour the mixture into a small glass container.
- Keep your lip balm container in the refrigerator and allow it to set.
Candelilla wax is 100% vegan. It is derived from the South American candelilla shrub. It contains high amounts of fatty acids. It is easily absorbed by the skin. Note that candelilla wax can take a few extra days to solidify completely so have patience.

5. Orange & Vanilla Lip Balm
Orange is a surprisingly popular choice of colour for lip tints. The combination of fresh citrus scent with sweet vanilla sounds (or smells?) almost heavenly.
Ingredients:
- Shea butter
- Coconut oil
- Beeswax
- Sweet orange essential oil
- Vanilla extract
Process:
- Heat 1 tablespoon of shea butter and 1 tablespoon of beeswax using the double boiling method.
- Add 1 tablespoon of coconut oil and stir well.
- You can add a small piece of orange lipstick if you have one and you wish to.
- When it cools down, add a few drops of sweet orange essential oil and mix well.
- Add a few drops of vanilla essence and mix once more.
- Pour the mixture into a small glass container.
- Transfer your lip balm container to the refrigerator and allow it to set.
Bonus Tip: Blend dried orange peels to make orange peel powder. You can mix this Vitamin C rich powder with milk and use it to scrub your lips/face/body once a week.
6. Rose Lip Balm
Rose symbolizes beauty. Who wouldn't want a lip balm infused with the fragrance and goodness of this beautiful flower! The blend of other fat-rich ingredients will ensure your lips are always moisturized.
Ingredients:
- Castor oil
- Coconut oil
- Cocoa butter
- Rose essential oil
- Rose petal powder
Process:
- Heat the cocoa butter for a few seconds to melt it.
- Add 1 teaspoon of castor oil and coconut oil; mix well.
- Add a pinch of rose petal powder and stir.
- Finally, add a few drops of the rose essential oil and mix once more.
- Pour the mixture into a small glass container.

Bonus Tip: Rose petal powder can be made by blending sun-dried rose petals. You can also use Alkanet powder for imparting hues of red in your lip balm. This powder is extracted from the herb's root.

- Add 1 teaspoon of coconut oil and stir.
- Add 1 teaspoon of sweet almond oil and stir.

- Add a pinch of beetroot powder or a few drops of hibiscus petal juice for imparting colour to your lip balm.
- Add a few drops of lavender essential oil and mix well.
- Pour the mixture into a small glass container.
- Keep your lip balm container in the refrigerator and let it freeze up.
